Shushania Wright was born on January 16, 1951, to the late Tena Minor and Albert R. Johnson Sr. She spent part of her early years in Delaware before the family relocated to Harlem, where she would go on to build a life full of love, laughter, and service.
Shania earned her associate’s degree from Interboro Institute in the late 1970s. She began her professional career with the New York City Park Rangers and later transitioned to the NYC Housing Authority. As a Housing Assistant under the BEST program and later as a Community Coordinator, she was instrumental in helping countless families transition into public housing. Her compassion and dedication made a lasting impact in the communities she served. Shania retired from the Housing Authority in 2018, following 30 years of dedicated service.
To know Shania was to love her. Her smile could light up any room, and she was absolutely stunning, with a personality and sense of humor to match. Her sharp wit and unforgettable one-liners had everyone in stitches. But beyond the laughter, she was a woman of strength, deeply principled when it came to matters of responsibility, finances, and unconditional respect for self and others. In other words, she stood on business.
Shania had a deep love for animals and cared for many over the years - dogs, hamsters, birds, and especially her beloved cat, Shoni. She also had a passion for travel and enjoyed bus outings and cruises with friends.
For over 60 years, Shania shared an unbreakable sisterhood with her best friends, Frieda and Cookie. Together, they became affectionately known as “The Ladies of Essence,” hosting dance parties at some of New York City’s most iconic nightclubs. Their bond was legendary, built on love, loyalty, and laughter, and will live on forever.
Shushania is preceded in death by her beloved mother, Tena Minor; her father, Albert R. Johnson Sr.; her first-born son, Raymond Sterrett Jr.; and her brother, Richard Minor II.
She leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. She is survived by her husband, Robert Wright Sr.; her loving son, Robert Wright Jr.; and her precious grandsons, Raymond Sterrett III and Ryan Wright. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Savasia Minor; her nephew, Richard Minor III; her niece, Cherisse Minor; her brother, Albert R. Johnson Jr.; and sister-in-law, Libby Johnson, along with a host of other nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Shania's circle of friends was endless, and her impact immeasurable. She will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
We love you, and we will miss you forever.
“The Ladies of Essence” are with you always.
