Margarette Ademuwagun Obituary

Margarette Ramsey Ademuwagun, a devoted mother, aunt and a beloved matriarch of the
Ramsey family, passed away peacefully on March 10th, 2026 at the age of 79. She leaves
behind a legacy of creativity, love and devotion to her family.

Margarette was born August 29, 1946, in Sumter, South Carolina. She was a woman of
remarkable beauty, artistic talent and passion. Her creativity was most prolifically
demonstrated in her fashion designs and fashion illustrations. Educated in fashion design at the
High School of Art & Design, Parsons School of Design and later, Fashion Institute of
Technology, Margarette dedicated much of her life to expressing herself through fashion and in
her later years, jewelry design. She was also an excellent seamstress. She first learned to sew
from her mother, Louise Ramsey. She was an exceptionally talented designer, known for
creating beautiful handbags, belts, garments and coats that reflected her creativity and
impeccable craftsmanship. She was also a gifted fashion illustrator. Her early fashion
illustrations, arguably considered more like works of art than fashion sketches, challenged the
Eurocentric aesthetic of her time and portrayed Margarette’s belief in the diversity of black
beauty. Her outstanding attention to detail and fine tailoring caught the eye of fashion model
and former Ebony Fashion Fair editor, Audrey Smaltz, where Margarette worked as her
personal designer before leaving the world of fashion to become a mother and homemaker.
She also shared her talents with at-risk youth by teaching Arts and Crafts at Spofford Juvenile
Detention Center.

In 1979, she married and later became the proud mother of her beloved son, Solomon, who
remained her greatest pride and deepest joy. Margarette later returned to her academic
studies and in 1991, she earned a Bachelor’s Degree of Science in Business from Touro College,
where she graduated Cum laude.

Beyond her artistic gifts, Margarette found great joy in expressing her love through caregiving
and cooking. She especially loved cooking for her family during the holidays where her
Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners became treasured traditions. Some of her personal favorite
dishes included beef wellington and coconut cake. She loved to bake cakes and pies. She
particularly enjoyed collecting recipes and experimenting with new dishes. Margrette was also
always available to babysit or care for an ill loved one. Margarette will be remembered for her
beauty, kindness, her creativity, her fiery spirit and her strong sense of conviction. She leaves
behind memories that will be cherished always.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Louise Ramsey and Mark Ramsey, and her siblings,
Jean Williams and Theodore Ramsey. She is survived by her loving son, Solomon Ademuwagun,
her remaining sisters, Edith Jackson, Nia Benut Searson, as well as a host of nieces, nephews,
great nieces and great nephews who will continue to cherish her memory and carry forward her
legacy of love and creativity.
