LeRoy Wright, Jr. Obituary

With hearts full of love and gratitude, we celebrate the life of LeRoy Albert Wright, Jr. who peacefully passed away on Monday, July 6, 2026 at the age of 69 in Harlem, NY at Henry J. Carter Specialty Hospital.

Depending on where your paths crossed, you may have known him as Roy, Rory, Heavy, Dad, Uncle, or Son. The many names he carried reflected the many roles he embraced and the countless lives he touched throughout his journey.

Born on February 4, 1957, in the Bronx, New York, to Sarah Doris Roach and LeRoy Albert Wright, Sr., LeRoy embraced life with curiosity and enthusiasm. He lived a full life and loved the outdoors, sports, the arts, and, above all, music.

He attended Adlai Stevenson High school and Harlem Preparatory before receiving his GED. He dedicated approximately 25 years of service to the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation until his retirement.

Left to cherish LeRoy's memory are his former wife of eighteen years, Katherine R.T. Wright, whose friendship remained one of life's enduring gifts; their daughter, Nicole E.V. Davis, and son-in-law, Marquese T. Davis; his daughter, Shaquanna M. Wright, whose late mother was Margaret Carter; and she extended LeRoy's legacy with the gift of two smart and humorous grandchildren, Mackenzie C. Wright-Mercer and Melvin Noah Mercer Jr. He also leaves behind his eldest sister, Beverly Ann Wright; nieces Say'Mirah Wright-Nelson and Lillian Picone-Nelson; nephew Nicholas Picone-Nelson; his youngest sister, Theresa Wright; niece Dr. Andrea Wright, Ph.D.; grand-nephew Travis Scott Jr.; his older brother through his late father, Sheldon Weeks Sr.; sister-in-law Sabrina Weeks; nephew Sheldon "Junior" Weeks Jr.; former sister-in-law Karen A. Taylor-Hamilton and her husband, Donald Hamilton; his childhood friend Marvin Flood; his NYC Parks Department family; along with many cousins, extended family members, and dear friends who will continue to honor his memory through lives well lived.

Welcoming him into the ancestral realm are his beloved mother, Sarah Doris Roach; his father, LeRoy Albert Wright Sr.; his treasured Uncle Boo; his brother-in-law, Bernard "Bernie" Nelson; along with his grandparents and many aunts, uncles, relatives, and loved ones who preceded him in death.

While we mourn his transition to the ancestral realm, we are deeply grateful for the years shared. We find comfort knowing that love transcends time and space, it lives on in the stories we tell about him, the lessons we carry from encountering him, and the kindness and decency we extend to others in his memory. On September 26, 2026, family and friends will gather at one of his favorite places, Johnny’s Reef Restaurant on City Island for lunch, laughter and reflection.

"A life measured not only by years, but by the love given, the lives touched, and the memories that remain forever in our hearts."
