Born on September 28, 1920, Harrisburg, Virginia, had the privilege of being blessed with the birth of the captivating and loving spirit of Mrs. Hattie Alexander. She attended school up until the young age of 17; only to realize that school wasn't in her best interest. If you knew Mrs. Alexander the way I knew her, then you knew she was a hard working black woman. So at the age of 17, she took a job working on a military base in Virginia.

While working and creating a better life for herself, she met a man that would steal her heart and light her soul on fire. Overwhelmed with love and happiness, she married her first and only true love, Mr. William Alexander. At the early age of 22, she was deeply saddened and stricken by the death of her husband; she then left Harrisburg and moved to New York, where she would then use Harlem as her stage.

She began a beautiful career in fashion and modeling at the illustrious Savoy Ballroom. At the age of 25, she began pursuing her career in nursing, where she later started a job working as a nurse for Saint Barnabas Hospital for close to 40 years, where she then later retired. After retiring she lived a quiet life up until she moved to Bronx Center Nursing Home, where she was cared for and loved by caregivers and nurses.

On September 8, 2016, Hattie was called home after living a long beautiful, fruitful life. Her spunky, loving, ambitious soul vicariously lives on through her loving family -  Alphonso Young, Carla Young and John Young, along with a slew of great nieces, nephews and friends, near and far. Mrs. Alexander will always remain in our hearts and minds.

“In the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years.”
