Clarence Steward

CLARENCE GRADY STEWARD was born on June 5, 1938 in Edgeville, South Carolina to Dora Lee Steward and departed this life on September 22, 2016.  He was an Aircraft Mechanic in the Navy assigned to the Navy Air Transport Squadron Twenty-two (VR-22) in Norfolk, VA. When Clarence returned home, he rejoined his mother who had relocated from Queens to Manhattan in the neighborhood affectionately referred to as “Sugar Hill.” 

Clarence aspired to be a singer and took formal vocal lessons. On weekend nights during the 1960’s, he and his friend could be heard singing on the neighborhood corner. His baritone voice was very similar to the great jazz singer, Arthur Prysock. 

After leaving the Navy, Clarence worked odd jobs until he began his career with The City of New York Human Resources Administration. When retired he became the primary caretaker for his ailing mother until her passing.

Throughout the years, after work Clarence would spend his evenings caring for his younger sister Irene, later her daughter Sharmelle and his great-nephew Taurean. Clarence enjoyed watching Westerns, Sci-fi movies and Sports. He was an avid reader, a walking encyclopedia of sort and a great debater.

Clarence, whose nickname was “Grady”, was a kind, caring and generous soul.  He was a man who would always help a friend or family member in need.  Grady was respected by everyone he ever came across and he loved his mother Dora, above all else. Those that knew him will forever remember the positive impact he made in their lives.

Clarence leaves to cherish his memory – one sister, Irene Steward, Silver Spring, MD; one niece, Sharmelle Duncan-Scott, Sunrise, FL and one nephew, Julius Hicks, Anaheim, CA. He also leaves two great-nephews Taurean Duncan and Donovan Scott; five great-nieces Brieanna Scott, Kayla Scott, Jamie Hicks, Corri Hicks and Rylie Hicks; one great-grand niece Smyra Duncan; two great-grand nephews, Ashton Duncan and Damian Scott; and a host of other caring relatives and friends.
