Carol Lavinia Callender was born on May 15th, 1935 in Mount Vernon, NY to the late Sonny Brown and Carrie Hughes Williams. She was the sixth of nine children. Carol departed this life to be with the Lord on November 21st, 2018 at The Shirley Goodman/Himan Brown residence in New York City.
During her childhood the family relocated to the Bronx where she was educated and subsequently graduated from Taft High School. Carol met and married Eugene Albert Lee (deceased) and as a result of that union had two children Anthony and Cheryl. Years later she met and married Christopher Callender Jr. (deceased) and they had a son Christopher Callender III.
Carol came to know the Lord at an early age attending Thessalonia Baptist Church. She later attended and was baptized at St. Michael’s Church and then attended Grace United Methodist Church, both in Manhattan.
For many years she worked at the Manhattan Valley Day Care Center and the Douglass Senior Center as a cook. Upon retiring she attended the senior center socially.
Being a “social butterfly” and her passion for cooking she hosted many Thanksgivings and social gatherings where her family, friends and neighbors were all invited. She was known affectionately by many as Grandma CC and Ms. Carol. She enjoyed traveling to Atlantic City and Virginia Beach and loved spending time with her family and friends.
Carol leaves to cherish her memory her beloved children Anthony, Cheryl (son-in law Butch Edwards), and Christopher; sisters, Mrs. Vivian Lovett and Mrs. Marguerite Snead (brother in-law Claude Snead); seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
